COURSE DESCRIPTION - Please read
Fast and flat describes the first 10 miles. At mile 10, you will enter the maritime forest of Nags Head Woods Preserve and encounter a gravel trail road, which has some moderate inclines. Prepare for a combo of packed and loose stones.
A bit after mile 12, you will encounter another terrain change to softer, sandier ground. With this comes lots of natural beauty and some rolling hills. With existing fatigue likely in place; remember the following for a strong finish.
• Uphill on a trail calls for a consistent rhythm and shorter stride. Maybe even baby steps to keep your cadence high. Lean into the incline with a swing of the arms and hips to maintain your stride.
• Downhill on a trail has some skill involved as well, believe it or not. A fluid form with your body weight over your knees as you land will keep you strong. Run relaxed with some lateral arm movement to maintain balance.
These tips are possibly easier said than done after mile 12. Train on alternative terrain when possible, to help you stay steady through the off-road portion of the Flying Pirate!
